I’m watching “Gone with the Wind” with my mom right now–for roughly the 7th time–and I’m so glad we are. I just LOVE this movie. I love Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. What is it about them? Or I guess what is it about that movie?
For me it’s a few things. I love seeing the “Old South” on film–I know it’s not necessarily a true-to-life adaptation but it’s interesting just the same. All of the elegance and nonesense. Naps in the afternoon after a barbecue because that’s what “good girls” did… ?! Cracks me up.
I love the love story of Rhett and Scarlett, obviously. And of Scarlett and Tara; which is really only the lasting one.
My favorite thing about Rhett and Scarlett is just their honesty. Rhett particularly–he just knows who he is and sees who Scarlett really is and loves her despite herself. It’s great! And most of the time it’s hilarious. Scarlett is a stubborn, spoiled (until Tara falls to pieces), selfish, and cruelly clever person but she doesn’t apologize for herself. She survives, after all! “Fiddle-dee-dee. Well I won’t think about that just now. I’ll think about it tomorrow.” Love it!
So I know what I want for Christmas…
